Le Mans always brought us its share of purpose built sports cars from all over the automotive world. Two of the most remarquable examples are without any doubt the Cunningham C5R roadster and the Shelby Cobra Daytona. Briggs Cunnigham, heir to a Texan oil corporation in 1953, entered the C5R. This shows that oil fortune can also leed one to do intelligent things.
It did not win the event but its hemi engine sure made it a blast to race.
About ten years later, another Texan (!) was back with a coupe that was designed to beat Ferrari’s GTO, and it did just that, despite a low-tech pushrod V8. This year, Bob Bondurant himself came to Le Mans Classic and drove his former Daytona once again around the 13,5 km course!
